The Show

The Journal is a daily narrative news podcast made in partnership between Spotify Studios and the Wall Street Journal. Each day, we tell one important news story in 15-20 minutes. Our show focuses on money and business, applying those lenses to general news or zooming in on business stories that other outlets do not tell. We have covered everything from the popularity of Zyn, the resurrection of Abercrombie and the many businesses of Elon Musk. We've published revealing investigations into Facebook and the telehealth company Cerebral alongside the Wall Street Journal's print paper.

The Role

Both an editorial and management position, this is a leadership role on The Journal. This supervising editor will help producers and hosts shape daily episodes from the idea phase through final mix notes. They will oversee, edit, and project manage narrative series as needed. At the same time, they will be a manager and guide for producers growing in their careers. This person should be experienced in narrative storytelling, enthusiastic about working on tight deadlines, passionate about news, and excited about providing consistent and holistic feedback. While this role is set for normal work hours, it also requires flexibility and openness to weekend and after-hours work.

What You'll Do

  • Work with producers and hosts to prep for interviews.
  • Listen to drafts for what is working in each story and what needs to be added, restructured or reimagined, keeping an eye on journalistic standards as well as narrative momentum
  • Write collaboratively with producers, reporters and hosts to get scripts from draft to final language.
  • Manage the daily deadlines needed to get each episode over the finish line
  • Coordinate with Wall Street Journal staff to make sure all drafts meet the editorial standards of the paper
  • Contribute regularly to morning pitch meetings, both by pitching your own ideas and by helping strengthen others' ideas
  • Manage 3-5 producers and senior producers by providing regular feedback and support, adhering to Spotify's manager manifesto and values
  • Build and maintain relationships within the WSJ newsroom
  • Work closely with the show's Supervising Producer to make sure stories are getting the production resources they need
  • Report to The Journal's Executive Producer

Who You Are

  • A minimum of 5+ years of journalism or documentary experience; audio experience is a major plus.
  • A minimum of 2+ years of editing experience
  • Enthusiasm for news.
  • Comfort and proficiency in structuring and editing narrative pieces.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, and helping others develop in their careers.
  • Outstanding communication skills, across the board.
  • An ability to jump between topics and contribute meaningful guidance, no matter the context.
  • A strong vision for what makes exceptional, ambitious stories sing.
